“Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean;
wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow”
(Psalm 51.7)
These are the words of a repentant David when he had realized the sin in his life, and his need for salvation and redemption. Nathan had gone to him revealing his affair with Bathsheba. I was having my car washed last week at the place where you ride in your car all the way through the process. While in there, I realized that when my car entered into the wash, it was very dirty. But through the couple of minutes of rigid washing, the car came out on the other side clean.
It hit me that this is exactly what happens when we believe the gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ. David did, and anyone who comes to Christ does also. I didn’t clean the car going through there, the machinery and water did. We don’t save ourselves, nor do our works, but only the Holy Spirit does that. He does the washing and cleansing. And he uses the blood of Jesus Christ for the remission of our sins.
Faith is the central theme. I pay my money to the car wash company, and I trust the process. The same with the gospel. “For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; is the gift of God, and not a result of works, so that no man may boast” (Eph 2:8,9). We, by faith, trust the finished work of Jesus on the cross. When we enter this relationship by faith, we are filthy, dirty rags. But on the other side, we are washed, whiter than snow. The word says it, we must believe it.
So, the next time you have your car washed, take your kids with you and share the ‘Carwash Gospel’. Add your own testimony to it. Believe me, they’ll get it! The Holy Spirit will see to that.
