Dads, in your career, I would suppose that you have always pursued more responsibility, climbing up the ladder of success, making more money, whatever. Maybe you’re very entrepreneurial and started your own firm. You’re the boss, and you get to call the shots, all of which ain’t bad. I did that for 25 years. But I did find that on payday, I was always the last one to get paid, if there was anything left over. So much for owning your own firm. But I wouldn’t change it for anything. I loved it.
Now listen closely. What if I were to tell you that the God of the universe who created heaven and earth and everything in it had actually put you in charge of his most valuable and treasured asset? And it’s not temporal, it’s eternal. By grace, you have been appointed the leader in your family, with full authority to manage them well. Yes, Christ is the big boss, but you are there in the next office right under him. And quite frankly, God don’t make no mistakes. That’s what my Tennessee buddy told me years ago.
Pay careful attention to this. ‘And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”’ (Mt. 28.18-20)
See, you are actually working under his authority to accomplish what he has ordained. The highest order of creation is mankind. God created Adam and Eve and he didn’t make a mistake with them. And Psalm 139 says the same about you and your wife and your children. “For you formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are you works; my soul knows it very well. My frame was not hidden from you, when I was being made in secret, intricately woven in the depths of the earth. Your eyes saw my unformed substance; in your book were written, every one of them, the days that were formed for me, when as yet there was none of them.” (Psa. 139.13-16)
Since God doesn’t make any mistakes, he has provided you with the children and the next gnerationsthat he had ordained before the foundation of the world. And as Jesus said, your primary role is to disciple them for the gospel of Jesus Christ. There is no higher calling, no money can buy it, no promotion can equal it. You are God’s chosen servant leader inyour family. There is no further promotion. There’s no higher pay that goes with it. Everything you need will be granted to you. That is, if you accept this responsibility with fear and trembling, and in total reliance and obedience to him and his word. The Holy Spirit will guide you, counsel you and ensure your success.
There’s no higher calling in a dad’s life. But know this, Jesus is coming back, and he will judge our works in Christ. When the Lord knows that you’re serious and dedicated to pursue this high calling, obviously not perfectly, by grace, he will provide everything you need to succeed. The cross ensured that! Pray, disciple and you will hear these words, WELL DONE!!!
