Have you ever pondered the question, who are you? Or better still, who are you in Christ? In this broken sin-filled world, sometimes it’s hard to know one’s true identity. A son or daughter, husband or wife, father or mother, grandparent, ministry director, athlete, business person, and the beat goes on.
Many of you know that during 1986 God awakened me and the result became Dallas Real Estate Ministries (DREM.org). That morning I went searching the scriptures in light of what God revealed, that being he wanted to ‘build a spiritual house in the Dallas real estate community’. Frankly, I had never seen that in the Bible. But, there it was in my concordance. And this is where it gets interesting.
In 1 Peter 2, we see the image of the ‘house’ with its cornerstone (vs. 7b) being Christ. Lean into this. “As you come to him, a living stone rejected by men, but in the sight of God chosen and precious, you yourselves like living stones are being built up as a spiritual house, to be a royal priesthood, to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ” (vss. 4,5).
Read on, there is more. “But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light” (vs. 9). If you are ‘in Christ’, this is who you are. Allow me to summarize.
Living stones, royal priesthood, chosen race, holy nation, a people possessed by Christ…and what are we to be about? To offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Christ, and to proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his light, no, marvelous light! And it’s all by grace!
Do you see it? This is his Church, his spiritual house…and in Christ, the Chief Cornerstone, we are his living stones comprising the Body of Christ. Have you really ever stopped and meditated on just ‘who you are’ in Christ? This is so far over and above anything that you might think of yourself in human terms. Next time you are feeling depressed, maybe even worthless, take time to reread these truths and REJOICE!!!
In Christ, you are so special that the next time I see you I might be tempted to worship you. Well, not really!!
