During a conversation with my friend, Kevin, he relayed a recent meeting that he and his brother had with a close relative of theirs. They were engaged in discussing the gospel and his brother introduced this thought that I had never heard. But I loved it. Relative to belief in God, who is unseen, except for his creation, he used this illustration.
As an airplane pilot, you rely so heavily on someone that you do not see during your flight. It’s the air traffic controller. But he is so significant for you as a pilot in whom to place your trust.
The writer of Hebrews clearly defines godly faith. “Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen” (Vs. 11.1). Assurance and conviction are powerful life attributes. Any pilot would tell you those are very necessary for a safe flight. Hebrews later makes a very profound statement.“By faith we understand that the universe was created by the word of God, so that what is seen was not made out of things that are visible” (vs. 3).
The Spirit gives us even more clear insight. “for we walk by faith, not by sight” (2 Cor. 5.7). The verses in Romans provide added exhortation. ‘For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek. For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith to faith, as it is written, “The righteous shall live by faith”’(vss. 1.16,17).
But God does not leave us alone just to have blind faith without substance. His creation speaks volumes about who he is and why we can trust him with our lives. “For what can be known about God is plain to them, because God has shown it to them. For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse” (Rom. 1. 19,20).
Folks, what’s it going to be? Deny that God exists because you can’t see him, or by faith, trust him in every area of your life. O, by the way, Jesus, while on earth, told the Jews and the disciples that if you’ve seen Me, you’ve seen the Father. And in Hebrews, we are told that he is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of his nature and he upholds the universe by the word of his power. Does anyone need more reason to place their faith in the One True Living God? I think not.
